Description

West Papua in 2018

Indonesia’s easternmost region of West Papua is also its most controversial. The government has awarded the two provinces of the region the status of Special Autonomy bringing substantial economic development. In addition, relative political stability has seen a series of successful democratic elections. Yet many challenges remain, including the suppression of dissent, an often overzealous security response and the ongoing marginalisation of many Papuans. Given this situation it is often difficult to find a common ground in discussions of West Papua. The participants in this panel, including former activists of the Free West Papua movement and university academics from Cendrawasih University, will discuss the current situation in West Papua addressing the region’s economy, democracy, society, culture, and politics.

Speakers:

  • Dr Michael Manufandu | Cendrawasih University
  • Franz Albert Joku | Senior Journalist in Papua New Guinea
  • Nick Messet | Former Foreign Minister of Free West Papua Movement

Chaired by Dr Chris Wilson
